Top Ten Tuesday: Favoutie Movie Trailers

Welcome to another new, weekly feature: Top Ten Tuesday. Every Tuesday, I’ll present a new top ten list of some of my favourite things.

This week, I present to you my Top Ten Favourite Movie Trailers. Because let’s be honest, even if the final product may not always live up to the hype, there are plenty of movies that make us say, “I NEED TO SEE THAT, NOW!”

10) Cloverfield (2008)

Say what you will about the found footage giant monster movie, but the trailer immediately made me want to see it.

9) Sin City (2005)

Tell me you don’t get pumped when that music kicks in at 1:15. This made me run out and buy all the graphic novels in preparation for this.

8) The Matrix (1999)

When this trailer was first released, EVERYBODY was asking what the hell the titular Matrix was. Even the website for the movie was simply whatisthematrix.com. It wound up being worth the wait, though, because the movie was spectacular. The reveal of what The Matrix was blew many minds back in the day, including mine.

7) Hellboy (2004)

This was actually the second trailer, but it’s the one that officially sold me on the movie. John Hurt’s line, “There are things that go bump in the night, Agent Myers. We are the ones who bump back” made me badly want to see this.

6) Lord of the Rings Trilogy Trailer (2000)

This wasn’t just a trailer for The Fellowship of the Ring. No, this was a trailer for the whole trilogy. I’ll admit, up until that point, I had never read J.R.R. Tolkein’s work. But after watching this, especially seeing each amazingly designed character step up onto that hill? I immediately went out and bought the books, starting with The Hobbit, as recommend by a friend. The movies absolutely did not disappoint.

5) Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Say what you will about The Phantom Menace, but every Star Wars fan completely nerded out seeing this trailer for the first time. It was the movie everyone would see in theatres. Which might have proved problematic for…

4) Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

Fortunately, Mike Myers and company knew they couldn’t compete with Star Wars. So they rolled with it, giving us a hilarious trailer for the Austin Powers sequel.

3) Superman Returns

Again, say what you will about the final product, but you can’t deny that this trailer showcased that Superman was absolutely back. It certainly helped to be accompanied by a piece of John Williams’ work from the original Donner film. I watched this with happy tears in my eyes the first time and would watch it on repeat multiple times.

2) The Avengers

Loki: I have an army.
Tony: We have a Hulk.
Me: *high pitched squealing*

And my number one favourite trailer of all is…

1) The Muppets (2011)

This trailer will be nigh-impossible to beat. It sets you up under the assumption that it’s some run-of-the-mill romantic comedy. Then, as they announcer starts listing off the cast, we suddenly get, “Kermit the Fffffffrog…” as he hesitates. And then “Miss Piggy?!”

And then Jason Segal is all “Wait wait wait stop…are there Muppets in this movie?” while surrounded by an army of Muppets. Absolutely brilliant marketing strategy and totally in line with classic Muppets humour.

I wound up seeing The Muppets three times in theatres.
